Montoya championed reverse grids and regular sprints in F1. Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya said that he supports innovative weekend formats, and also spoke about his views on the possible return of the championship prediction by fixed matches to Africa.
I think it will be great for F1 to race in Africa. In the past, people have wondered why we went to Bahrain, the Middle East. And now we come to Abu Dhabi and Qatar. And these are amazing places. I will go to Abu Dhabi for New Year. A special place.
[Races] can be done a little more. Look at NASCAR - 36 stages. I think we can expand the sprints. They are amazing and there are not enough of them. We need to make them standard, like in MotoGP.
Accident exceptions required: If a driver is involved in an incident in a sprint, this should not be taken into account in the team`s budget. Often riders are too careful in sprints because they know what the consequences of an accident will be.
It would also be cool to introduce a reversible grille, like in the F-2 and F-3. Everyone loves them. If it works, why not introduce it to F1? Traditionalists will reject such an idea. But in the past they said that sprints should not be held, that there should be no more races, that they should not be held at night. However, everything that F1 has implemented has made it better.
Pilots complain that there are too many races. In my time there were eight less, but we worked on tests every week, summer and winter. We could race on Sunday and test on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - every week.
I`d rather race than run in circles alone in nowhere! Montoya said.
