UEFA will discuss the reform of tournaments forecast by fixed football information between teams.
A meeting of the executive committee of the organization will be held today in Nyon. It will discuss several questions about reforms in European competitions.
The first is the question of a new selection system for the World Cup. From 2026, 48 teams will participate in the World Cup, 16 of which are European. In this regard, UEFA plans to change the qualification stage.
At the qualifying stage, 12 groups of 4 or 5 teams can be created. Under such a system, the teams that take the first places in the groups will receive a direct ticket to the World Cup, and the remaining 4 places will be played in the playoffs.
It`s not the only option being considered, but any change to the current qualifiers will involve a reduction in the number of matches - in years past, some television audiences were lost to meaningless games.
UEFA will also consider making changes to the format of the Nations League. If earlier the teams that took the first places in League A groups got into the final four, now the playoffs may appear in the tournament, in which those teams that will take second places will also participate.
It is noted that UEFA refused to expand the European Championship to 32 teams. The new format was planned to be introduced from 2028, but UEFA decided to exclude this reform from the plans. It is believed that such a format would reduce the significance and prestige of the tournament.
